AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY

The Backus American Legion Auxiliary is part of the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization and is one of over 10,000 units in the United States and some foreign countries.  The Backus Auxiliary embodies the spirit of America that has prevailed through war and peace. Along with the Backus Legion, the Auxiliary solidly stands behind America and is extremely supportive of the local community through the many services and fundraising activities the Auxiliary plans and operates. The Backus Auxiliary raises approximately $8,000.00 per year, and proceeds from fundraising efforts are distributed back into the community.  The following illustrates the many worthwhile causes supported by the Auxiliary:

  • The Eagle’s Healing Nest, a Veteran’s help organization

  • Three Educational Scholarships to qualified seniors from Pine River-Backus School.  Scholarships are used for college or trade schools

  • Additional two scholarships in conjunction with the SAL

  • Friends of Youth.  Provides monetary assistance to offset expense for 4H participants in the State Fair

  • Pay It Forward.  This is through Essentia Health to help those going through cancer treatments for gas, food, or other expenses not covered by insurance

  • Pine River/Backus and Hackensack Area Food Shelves

  • Faith in Action

  • The Warehouse, an after-school center

  • Backus/Hackensack Giving Tree

  • Backus Cornfest

  • Fight for Blindness

  • Lakes Area Association

  • Holiday Parties for Kid’s

  • Habitat for Humanity

  • Gifts for Troops.

  • Gifts for Veterans in Assisted Living Facilities

  • Christmas gift for Veteran Family

  • Cass County Veteran’s services

  • Donations to Veteran’s in need.

  • Acknowledgements/Recognition at funerals of Veterans

Auxiliary fundraisers also include a Monthly Breakfast from March thru October, a Cornfest Raffle and Hunter’s Dinner at the legion. The Auxiliary Poppy Fundraising proceeds go directly back to Veteran’s Organizations.

From a National look, the American Legion Auxiliary was originally organized to assist The American Legion; however, the Backus American Legion Auxiliary has achieved its own unique identity through its many endeavors illustrated above. Like the Legion, the Auxiliary’s interests and successes have cast a wide blanket that encompass many needs of the community, as well as other worthwhile charities familiar to Americans.  The Backus American Auxiliary accomplishes all its endeavors with dedicated volunteers.
